ON a bright, sunny Wednesday afternoon in July, 1904, a crowd gathered at Carmarthen's new cycle track in the town park.
They were there to hear Douglas Reid officially declare open a fundraising bazaar. It was raising money for a proposed tuberculosis hospital or sanatorium.
A man called Mr H. Giles, a Lammas Street photographer, set up his tripod in view of the main platform and he took a picture of the scene.
He had already taken posed photographs of the main dignitaries of the day inside a marquee, where tables and chairs had been set up to serve tea for 8,000 visitors.

Standing to one side of the speaker are two men, scribbling into notebooks.
There can be no doubt that one is a Journal reporter and the other is from his rival paper, The Welshman.

So each reporter must have rushed back to their offices and begun writing out their reports that after noon.
